What is Stump Grinding?
After a tree is cut down, the stump and extensive root system remain. Stump grinding utilizes a heavy-duty machine featuring a high-speed rotating cutting wheel equipped with carbide teeth. This machinery shaves the stump down, layer by layer, turning the dense wood into small chips. We typically grind the stump 4 to 6 inches below the existing grade, providing enough clearance to cover the area with topsoil and grow grass.
When is Grinding the Right Choice?
Stump grinding is generally the most practical solution for residential and commercial property owners. It is highly useful when you want to remove an eyesore, eliminate a tripping hazard, or free up lawn space for landscaping or play areas without disturbing the surrounding soil too extensively.
Our Process and Access Considerations
- Site Assessment: We evaluate the stump size, location, and proximity to structures, hardscaping, or underground utilities.
- Equipment Sizing: Access to backyards is a common concern. We employ compact, maneuverable grinders capable of fitting through standard residential gates (as narrow as 36 inches), ensuring we can reach difficult spots securely.
- The Grinding Process: The stump and major surface roots are safely chipped away below the surface level.
- Cleanup: The process leaves behind a mound of wood chips and soil. Our standard service includes backfilling the newly created hole with this material. We can also arrange for complete debris haul-away if required.
Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
While grinding takes care of the visible stump and upper roots, it leaves the deep underground root network intact (which naturally decays over time). Full stump removal involves excavating the entire root ball. Full removal is much more invasive and labor-intensive but is necessary if you intend to lay a new concrete foundation or immediately plant a new tree in the exact same spot.
